An analysis of the maternity services provided by the traditional birth attendant in a rural parish - St. Elizabeth Jamaica, West Indies

The study reveals the fact that most "Traditional Birth Attendants" (Nanas) are elderly individuals, who acquired their skills through training from another Nana. In addition to delivering babies they offer assistance to the mother in the home after birth. Though some of their practices are harmful, it is believed that mothers use their services due to the unavailability of hospital facilities in their area. It is recommended that training of these Nanas would be of benefit to the community as a whole (AU)
